QDog's BBQ and Blues, Marion Iowa
After a long hiatus, back at QDog's! Always a good time for me!
After a long hiatus, back at QDog's! Always a good time for me!
As I write this it is colder than Billy Hell out! Hopefully spring will have arisen by now and the music and BBQ will be hot at QDog's!
I will be playing music for the dinner meeting of the Iowa City Habitat for Humanity. I appreciate the efforts of this marvelous group of volunteers and this very worthy cause. Build It Up!
Wow! It has been a long time since I have played at George's, the prototypical neighborhood tavern on Market Street in Iowa City! Mike and Melissa are ardent supporters of live music, hosting many local bands, jazz faculty concerts and supporting student musicians as well. I love the vibe and the patrons are the best. I hope you can stop down! I will enjoy playing music for you!
I am heading up to my hometown, Rhinelander Wisconsin, to play a couple of concerts. The afternoon performance will be child-oriented, featuring good old songs that kids sing in school plus selections from my children's album, Don't Make a Dinosaur Sore. At 7 PM I will be presenting a selection of more adult songs from my 11 CD recordings of blues, jazz, ragtime, and folk/country songs. Very excited for this chance to play at the ArtStart gallery space!
Back from sunny San Antonio. Happy to be home and playing music at the Cow!
Always warm and cheery at the Wine Bar. Join me in my final gig before a little winter respite down in San Antonio!
First gig of 2017! Happy New Year and I hope it will be a better year for all of us than last year! I am so grateful to be still playing my music for you all. At age 74, every night playing music is pretty special!
last minute add-on show at the Motley Cow. Brrrr! Cold outside, but hot music in there!
Pre-New Year's Eve gig! Come on down!
A pre-Christmas bash at the best 'Que' spot in the upper midwest. Jeff and Judy welcome you to their club with lots of great beer and tap to slosh down incredible food! I love the vibe of this place!
Happy to play a Sunday afternoon out by the river and the historic Sutlff Bridge. One of the great roadhouse taverns of the Iowa countryside. Beautiful views and great, down to earth folks who love the community and society of tavern life. I really enjoy playing here.
I am very excited to return to Sammy's after so many years. I was introduced to the place in 1963 when my pal, Larry Heagle, took me in for a pie. Incredible sausage recipe and thin-crust heavily covered with mozzarella. Then, in later years, I played music there whenever I was back in town. When I recently called about a gig, Jimmy the owner said, "Yah! We still got a poster on the wall from the last time you played here!" 8^)*
First date set up for a short tour of Wisconsin!
I will be featuring a brand new foot piano and some of my other unique guitars in my return to a QDogs. Great BBQ and music four nights a week, QDogs is a true supporter of live music. A crazy noisy room filled with people enjoying life in the midwest!
Warm yourself up with some food and grog at the best little bistro in the area! Great food, friendly staff, many great beers, and some blues, jazz, ragtime, and country folk! What more could you want on a cold December night!
After a short hiatus, back in town at the Motley Cow! Yay! 8^)*
Solo Gig in benefit of the Meat Market helping to recoup losses during this year's flooding!
My only Q Dogs date in November! Looking forward to seeing you all there!
Always glad to join forces with Dan Johnson and Dennis McMurrin at the historic and unique blues venue, FB and Co. in wonderful downtown Waubeek!
Another show at QDogs, featuring blues music 4 nights a week. It is rare to find a place that is so supportive of live music and I am proud to be a part of the rotation!
A duo gig with the Daddy-o Dennis McMurrin while Dan Johnson heads out to Colorado. A special benefit to help out the Meat Market after the effects of flood preparation, this should be a lot of fun! I will provide the rhythm and back ground for Dennis on his songs and he will provide hot licks and crazy jocularity for my stuff! Lou and her staff will provide the mix of Cajun and Czech cuisine! Please support the Czech Village in its return from the flood zone!
I had a great time last Saturday in my return to QDogs! Such an appreciative audience. Following my performance I had a brisket sandwich and some cheesey potatoes. The spuds were great, but the brisket was the best I have ever eaten (and I have had brisket in KC, Memphis, Arkansas, and myriad joints in Texas). Congrats to Jeff for that award-winning beef! Anyway, I am back on the 14th and looking forward to an evening of the blues!
Yes! Back to the land of killer barbecue and 4 nights a week of blues! I really enjoy playing music at this place. Note the special time for the gig, between the Hawkeyes and the Cubs. These folks are sports 'cray-cray' as well as blues crazy! Thanks to Jeff and Judy Coil for keeping it live!
Wow! Back to Iowa City and right out of the blocks at one of my favorite venues! David and his crew provide some very fine victuals and support for Iowa City Live Music! I hope to see you there! I will probably still be speaking with a Minnesota accent, doncha know?
A late add-on and a welcome surprise. I will be part of Maucieri's Crosslake Days celebration. It will be the final gig of the summer for me before we drain the plumbing, turn off the electric and head back to Iowa City. As always, sadness about leaving Minnesota but happiness to be back in our Iowa City home!
The Annual Booyah Festival features a cauldron over a wood fire cooking all night prior to the Fest. Ole and the local denizens mind the stew of many different kinds of meat (some exotic wild game) and vegetables. People come from miles around to celebrate the end of summer and beginning of the beautiful fall season in the northwoods. I will be playing my music outdoors while people consume all the good stuff. It is such a great example of neighbors, friends, and visitors coming together and relaxing. See you there!
I had a wonderful time last week in my first post-surgery performance at The Bistro! I hope folks will continue to show up, dance and sing, drink some brewskis, and enjoy the family that is Maucieri's in Crosslake! It's summer in Minnesota!
Second of only 3 shows this summer at Andy's. Nice outdoor patio gig (weather permitting). Always a lot of fun with new faces and friends from all over the Midwest. I'll do my best to make everyone musically happy!
Back from an ordeal of gall bladder surgery with major complications, this will be an exciting return to Maucieri's Hope to see you there!
It's great to be back at the cabin and I am excited to be playing some dates at Maucieri's Italian Bistro in Crosslake. Besides being voted Best Pasta in Minnesota, Maucieri's supports live music and I will be appearing intermittently all summer!
My final date for the spring at QDogs in Marion. Wow! It has been so much fun and I am already looking forward to my return in the fall after a Minnesota summer of catching fish, cleaning fish, cooking fish and eating fish, night time loons, one channel of TV, woodpeckers hammering away, eagles diving in for fish and eating them on the bank near our cabin. Then, before you know it, birches turn yellow and the leaves start to fall and then we are back in Iowa City.
Baxa's Sutliff Tavern! 5 PM Sunday! Final gig in Iowa before we take off for the summer and our 50 Lakes Minnesota fishing cabin! We love Iowa but we also love Minnesota and, even my home state of Wisconsin. I guess that just makes us Midwesterners!
Always a good time at QDogs. It has been a home away from home for the past few months. I appreciate the audience who are very musically literate and many bring their kids for the food and music. The venue is such that folks can easily come up and check out my instrumentation and talk about my music. Jeff and Judy support live music, a rarity in these changing times! Thanks to everybody!
Final performance until next fall at the beloved Meat Market with Dan Johnson on bass!
Final show this spring at the Motley Cow. It has been a great run with a fine relationship with the club, its patrons, and a very generous staff. I am looking forward to a fall return when we get back in September.
Final Wine Bar show before we head up to Mosquitoville!
Spring in full swing and I will be swinging with the blues, the jazz, the folky country style stuff, what ever suits my fancy. Looking forward to it! See you there!
Somehow people seem to just relate barbecue consumption with beer and blues. QDogs is the epitome! I really enjoy playing this place where food meets music, and people chat and listen and tap their feet while smacking their lips!
It is a treat to have a weekly gig set up close to my home here in Iowa City. I get to play lots of my newest songs and frequent guest musicians push me into trying different stuff and improvising. Life is good!
Doing the annual spring organizational dinner for Habitat for Humanity, my favorite charitable organization in the world! Playing a little dinner entertainment and featuring my original song, Build It Up!
Another evening of fun and frolic at the Motley Cow! Spring is here! See you there!
Spring is in the air and a young man's fancy turns to pulled pork! Always good food, good folks and a lot of fun at QDogs!
I love playing at the Motley Cow! A very relaxed atmosphere with a variety of people in attendance, old folks, kids, hippies, professionals locals, and people just out exploring beautiful Iowa City. Spring has made every one light-footed including this old dog!
I haven't had a chance to play Baxa's in a couple of months. Very excited to return to this unique Iowa rural roadhouse tavern. Very good food and wonderful patrons. A mix of motorcyclists, bicyclists, and folks from all around just out appreciating the wonderful bridge and river views. I love playing music there!
Always the April Fool, I am excited to play on my special day!
Back from Wisconsin to my regular Thursday night gig at the Motley Cow on Linn Street in Iowa City. Spring is here and I am excited to play music as much as I can!
Back to Marion and my favorite BBQ and Blues joint, QDogs. Wednesday geezer starting time 6-8PM!
Volume One Magazine is one of the hippest publications for music and art you can find in the midwest. Eau Claire is in a renaissance period right now and I am happy to play at the record and book store/art gallery associated with this magazine. It is called The Local Store on Dewey St. near Galloway and I will be singing and playing in the small gallery music area. I am hoping lots of long lost pals from our many years living and playing in Western Wisconsin will show up to hear my latest stuff!
Back up by Wausau to play at a great food and music venue. Tyler and his staff treat me right and I have a lot of friends and relatives to sing and play for! An early start for the geezers and I play late for the younger set. Lots of new songs and some old stand-bys! See you there!
A Cow in a Jester's Costume...what a great idea!
Back with my pals Dan Johnson and Dennis McMurrin taking turns singing our songs and supporting each other musically. Always a great time performing at a real true rural roadhouse tavern!
Milk that Cow!
I always have a great time playing music in Mt. Vernon. Looking forward to seeing you all there!
Back at the Cow Again!
Cancelled due to double booking. The great Tony Brown and Dan Johnson will be holding forth!
I will do my best to enhance your dining experience with my original material interfaced with Blues, Jazz, Folk, and other forms of American music! Dig it!
An intimate place with diverse patrons and an interesting menu of hand-made food with a plethora of exotic beverages. I will try to add to the ambience!
Last minute booking for Saturday the 13th 6PM. Always a good time and good food and music at QDogs!
Thursday night at QDogs means and early set for the geezers like me! 6PM start and time to pound down some ribs and a Shiner Bock after the gig!
My first appearance at Iowa City's fine dining bistro, The Motley Cow on Linn Street. David and Peter have been doing jazz on Tuesdays and want to branch out with a little acoustic folk, blues and other forms of American music. I am very excited to play several Thursday gigs at this wonderful venue!
This place is getting to be my home away from home!
Brr! Come out and warm up with spicy barbecue and hot blues and jazz!
No place in Iowa warmer than near the wood-fired Pizza Oven and the smiles of Aaron and Andrew, your friendly 'pizza-istas'! It is a great escape from the January chill. I will try to warm your cockles with some hot blues and jazz tunes!
First gig of 2016 at QDogs! It is my third visit and folks have been kind to me. As previously stated, great food in a place that supports live music, the kind you like! See you there!
Winter Blues Extravaganza on January 2nd. First gig of the New Year playing with my pals, The Tornadoes. I will open with a set of my stuff, the boys will throw out the jams with their high energy, old-school blues, and we will join together for a finale set. Baxa's is a great roadhouse tavern with good food, good people, and a history of good times!
Boxing Day performance. Get out of the house! You've had enough holiday. Come eat some barbecue and listen to the blues!
My first gig at QDogs Barbecue and Blues in Marion Iowa. I am excited to bring my music to a new crowd. They are making some tasty food and it looks like it will be a fun gig!
The Pizza oven will be warming our cockles and other important body parts. I hope to add some heat to the room with lots of new songs and guest appearances by musically kindred spirits! See you there!
I am so happy to be back playing at George's, Iowa City's finest tavern. Mike and Melissa have been supporting live music for a long time and the patrons are the best. I have a bunch of new songs and some new equipment that should sound just right! Might be a couple of pals sitting in with me on a few numbers too! See you there!
Lou and Mark and all the folks at the Village Meat Market and Restaurant are great supporters of live music. The place is tiny, with a meat counter and a very small food service area. But, they shoehorn in a bunch of people who love the food and come for the music as well. I am always happy to come and play my stuff there, sometimes along with Daddy-O Dennis McMurrin and usually with Dan Johnson. We share songs and support each other musically and psychically. The Village Meat Market and Restaurant was just listed as one of the 11 Most Unique Restaurants in Iowa. Unique?, Hell yes! Great food, great vibe, great people! Double-Hell-Yes!
Back at Waubeek, rocking on the Wapsipinicon with Dan Johnson, Dennis McMurrin and me trading songs and stories. It'll be a great time! See you there!
Back from a summer in Minnesota, armed with a temporary Scandinavian accent and a belly full of fish, I am looking forward to sharing the stage with my pal from Des Moines. Rob Lumbard is a Blues Hall of Fame lightning lefty guitarist who also sings left-handed. He has a similar mental set to mine regarding choice of music. Lots of good humor mixed in with some tough old blues and jazz tunes. We do a set apiece and then a finale set of duets. We have a lot of fun and you will too! See you there...
First gig back in Iowa after a great long summer of playing music in Minnesota and Wisconsin. I am looking forward to seeing old and new friends at a place I have learned to love in a great small town, Mount Vernon Iowa!
Jim Rossen, Tornaodoes' harmonica player extraordinaire, is unable to make this gig. I am honored to be asked to fill in for him with my old pals, Bob, Dan, and Rich. It is going to be so much fun!
My first time playing at Brigid's Pub in Bemidji. We visited last year and loved the town. Really good restaurants in the area. An Italian fine dining place called Tutti Benno and Brigid's as well. They have a great stage setting and feature music most nights of the week. I am looking forward to being interviewed on KBXE in the afternoon, playing the club that night, and just enjoying spending the weekend there!
Come down and help me celebrate my 73rd birthday while eating the famous end-of-summer soup concoction that is cooked all night by Ole and the boys over a wood fire in a huge cast iron cauldron. It is tasty and the music will be tasty too!
Back at Sackett's Bar in downtown Rhinelander Wisconsin for an evening of fun with old pals. My new blues album will be on sale and I will play songs from that as well as stuff from the previous 10 CDs. Too many songs and never enough time to sing them all! I will start about 8PM following my 55th annual Rhinelander High School class reunion. Talk about a Hodag nostalgia injection!
Artstart is a local gallery/cultural center that also appears to be a community activity source. I will post their website and more info soon.
Back in Wausau Wisconsin, for years one of my favorite places to play. These people love music and they know how to party. The 7PM start allows many of my relatives to get out early, have some fun, and get to bed on time! 8^)* I will continue to play until 11PM for the younger set who seem to enjoy my stuff as well. Great to be back in Central Wisconsin!
My third appearance at one of the best festivals in the US on the shores of Lake Superior. I have lots of new tunes and should have my 11th disc ready for sale!
A special evening of the blues at the local! I really have a great time playing music for my friends and neighbors. 50 Lakes Bar, Bottle Shop, Town Hall and Post Office has Nordeast on tap, a real pinball machine, a couple of pool tables, a paperback library and some of the friendliest bartenders in Minnesota. I will set up near the door out to the new patio. Come on down!
This is my first appearance at Andy's in Crosslake. An early 6PM start out on the patio, geezer hours! I don't know too much about the food or anything, but friends have been after me to get a gig there because they seem to enjoy the outdoor ambience. Nice stage set up. I am hoping for good weather and few, if any, mosquitoes! See you there!
Fourth of July is a crazy time up at the lake. Folks spend a weeks salary on fireworks to shoot off from their docks, putting the loons and the looney into terror! I will try to appease the blues and jazz gods who reside in the afterworld with my interpretations of their timeless efforts and a plethora of tunes that I have penned myself!
Summer is rolling back into Crow Wing County and the Lakes area. The best Italian food north of Minneapolis and a great place for music appreciators to gather. I have a new CD and tons of new songs to go with the stuff that you heard last summer. I love this place!
OK, there is no beach, but we don't need no stinkin' beach! It is summer in Minnesota and we have Nordeast on tap, Ole, Diana and Toni behind the bar, a meat raffle, bingo, and a couple sets of blues from Robert 'One-Man' Johnson. Beach wear is optional (but we hope certain of the residents don't choose that option!)
Back for four months of beautiful Minnesota summer, catch fish, clean fish, cook fish, eat fish! And best, a chance to play music for Dawn and all the patrons of Maucieri's! Lots of new songs, a brand new CD of old blues and jazz tunes, and I am pumped! See you there!
